Hospice Nurse Qualifications

To become a travel hospice RN, you must complete the required education and training to ensure you have the necessary experience and knowledge for working in the medical field. Qualifications you must have include:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in nursing

  • Certification from the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)

  • State license

  • One to two years of experience as a Hospice RN

You'll also need a license for each state you plan to work in while taking travel hospice RN assignments.

Hospice RN Duties and Responsibilities

The tasks you're in charge of may differ depending on where you work. In general, though, your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Providing personalized care for each patient

  • Monitoring vital signs

  • Offering emotional, mental and physical support to the patient and their family

  • Administering medication

  • Assessing patients' comfort levels and needs

  • Tracking patients' conditions, symptoms and behaviors

  • Documenting changes in condition

  • Working with physicians and specialists to develop treatment plans

  • Educating the patients' families about their progression and updates to their nutrition, medication or overall health

While hospice nurses primarily care for the patient, they may also offer support and compassion to the family, helping them understand that their loved one will be okay and letting them know when the end is near.
